It is always easy to create clutter in some areas, especially the dining room, living room, basement, and the office. You get that mail and set it down because you figure you will go through it later.
Well, later never comes, unless it is a bill of course. Magazines tend to be read and then placed down somewhere near the location where it was read. The dish drying rack in the kitchen fills up with drying dishes… or perhaps the dishes sit to dry so more end up on top.
Items used near and for the equipment in the entertainment center end up on the open shelving or on top. Other things like hairpins, little toys, pictures, batteries, video cables, etc. sit on shelves or tables to be convenient at that given moment.
The list could go on forever. These situations are normal, but you can help control pileups and clutter while enhancing the home by using some simplistic ideas and creative thinking.
Here are a handful of suggestions to consider.
Slotted Wall-Mount Mail Organizers
Clean up those piles of old mail for good! There are several different types and styles of wall mount organizers that work great for this particular scenario. The mail type is usually wooden and has several angled slots for dropping mail into it.
Many of them include hooks at the bottom for hanging keys. That mail that you think you may use later can go into a pending slot, and the bills can go in another one for easy retrieval.
Coupons can go in a slot too… or get a coupon book for that and save the slot for other papers in the home, such as your grocery list, to-do lists, memo pads, and more.
It is just too easy to look at a magazine and then set it down somewhere, like next to the reading chair. Magazine racks can take care of that issue with ease. You can purchase several and place them in commonly sat locations for improved home organization results.
There are many styles and types of magazine racks available. You will surely find one that matches the room’s persona, whether it includes chrome accents, wood accents, or vinyl materials. Some have other features, such as a storage drawer, multiple slots, stylish positioning, a rotating rack, and more.
Remote Control Holders
Have you ever lost a remote? Most likely, the answer is yes. Remote control holders are a great way to keep those handheld devices readily available. Most holders have a self-standing design. Some rotate, and some just stand upright. There are different styles too, but they usually appear with openings at the top for dropping remotes inside each space.
Many are made from wood, but there are several made from plastic too. As for options, you can get one with slots on the outside for pictures if you want a decorative, warm touch.
Place the remote holder close to the chair or couch for easy placement. Otherwise, nobody will use it.
Gadget holders are available in so many different variations, but many hold iPods, Android phones, chargers, headphones, etc. Some have built-in speakers and some charge the phone. Many are universal and can even hold tablets.
The best ones will have little pockets with storage areas for small parts or accessories. This will keep electronic items, gadgets, and accessories from sitting on the entertainment center, living room table, or any other convenient locations.
You can also get a gadget holder for everyone in the household. They can have them in their rooms so that they do not have to search for something when they need it. Things tend to get lost easily, and they are often found when you don’t need them. Gadget holders can help prevent that.
Bookshelves or Book Cabinets
Many homes already use bookshelves, but how are they being used? If you have heavy readers or children in your household, you may want to add a couple more and utilize different shelves for each person. That will motivate everyone to keep their own books together, and it prevents book pileups.
Just like those magazines, the books are read and then laid down wherever is currently convenient… like that table next to the chair that someone else needs for their coffee and cell phone.
Book cabinets can serve the same purpose, but they add an elegant touch. Wooden cabinets with glass doors not only add appeal, they also keep the dust at a minimal level on each shelf. No matter what you like, you can find many different styles of cabinets that work great for books.
Wooden doors can hide the appearance of book clutter like all those children coloring books and activity pads. Many prefer this concept with movie shelving too. The open display affects the look of the room.
Clothes show up everywhere: on the floor, piled up in a corner, tossed in the laundry room, etc. Clothes hampers create a clean, decorative look to any space.
Place one in everyone’s room for dirty clothes so that it is convenient when they change outfits, go to bed, etc. It will help keep the home cleaner and will reduce the time needed to clean up.
Self-Standing Shelving and Cabinets
The basement, garage, entryway, and even the back porch tend to pile up with various things. Self-standing shelving units or cabinets are a great way to eliminate those “compilations” of products.
In the entryway, you can use a vinyl cabinet for garbage bags, buckets, mops, brooms, shopping bags, cases of soda, etc. to clean up the area a bit.
On the back porch, you can use a cabinet for storing your rakes, outdoor brooms, winter gloves, hats, small grills, lawn sprayers, kid sprayers, etc. This will provide a better appearance and give you more room on the back porch.
In the basement, self-standing shelving units are a great way to organize the clutter that ends up down there. Cans of paint, chemical cleaners, old electronics, old magazines, old lamps, camping equipment, kid toys, collectible items, and more can be organized to allow a clean and spacious area for other things.
In the garage, cabinets work great for storing outdoor equipment, auto tools, parts/accessories, hobby products, etc. These cabinets will hide the cluster of various items in a neat sort of fashion.
Shelving units will work great for cleaners, cases of soda, outdoor toys, and other items that get commonly used. Accessing them will be easier and they will not look so clutter-like in comparison to items placed in the cabinets. Your garage will look great!
Computer desks tend to build up with various items too. Computer accessories currently not in use tend to sit around. Papers are usually present somewhere. Pens, calculators, software, and notepads lay around periodically. USB chargers, staplers, and network cables all lay there for days.
For the most part, it is an easy spot to place things. Drawer organizers fit neatly in the drawers to store small items, electronic equipment, office supplies, and more. It is also just as convenient as the office desk surface so it will help reduce the visible clutter.
Totes with Lids
Totes are universal when it comes to storage, but for toys, they work wonders. A toy box works great too, but totes are stack-able to save space. You can have a tote for stuffed animals, a tote for creativity toys, a tote for big trucks… and they can all stack together in one single spot.
This will increase space and make the area look great! Just don’t stack them too high or you may have a crying kid on your hands.
Both the garage and the basement could easily suffer from electrical cord clutter. Your power adapters, indoor extension cords, outdoor extension cords, coax cables, audio/video cables, HDMI cables, computer power cords, outdoor tool cords, project wires, tree supports, etc. can benefit from pegboard use.
Even ropes, solid aluminum wire, chains, garden hoses, and more organize perfectly on some pegboard in the garage.
There are many accessories available in stores designed for use on pegboards. They allow many items to hang on the wall, including hammers, pliers, small storage bins, screwdriver sets, bikes, rakes, other items.
Overall, pegboard does not look bad at all and will create a more organized area. Paint them if you want to. That will enhance the room’s appeal.
Regardless of what you use them for, you will surely be able to find what you need when you need it!
